The skyrocketing increase in the price of rice is currently forcing residents in Deli Serdang Regency to cook rice mixed with corn to reduce costs because the price of corn is cheaper than the price of rice.
Jumirah, resident of Hamlet III, Lengau Seprang Village, Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. The cost of living is depressed because the price of rice has risen to IDR 14,000 ($0.91) (16 September 2023) per kilogram, while the price of corn is cheaper at IDR 8,000 ($0.52) (16 September 2023) per kilogram.
Jumirah has been cooking rice and corn for two months, lives with her husband and two children in a very simple house. Jumirah's husband works odd jobs with sufficient income and earns a living to support her husband and two children.
Jumirah said that cooking rice mixed with corn can save money. Jumirah hopes that the government will care about people who cannot afford to buy rice amidst the price of rice which is increasing every day.
